Some of the most important artists of the French academy have been William Bouguereau (1825–1905), Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), Alexandre Cabanel (1823–1889) and Thomas Couture (1815–1879). Academic art is intently related to Beaux-Arts architecture, which developed in the same place and holds to an identical classicizing ideal. The Beaux-Arts fashion takes its name from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where it developed and where lots of the main exponents of the fashion studied. Gothic art developed in Northern France out of Romanesque in the 12th century AD, and led by the concurrent growth of Gothic architecture. It spread to all of Western Europe, and far of Southern and Central Europe, never quite effacing more classical kinds in Italy. In the late 14th century, the subtle court fashion of International Gothic developed, which continued to evolve till the late fifteenth century.
